On Monday 20 April, the English GCSE team, from across Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge Colleges (HRUC), proudly came together with GCSE English Language Grade 3 students to celebrate the outstanding talent and achievements of those who took part in the Young Writers Stranger Sagas competition.

Students from across our three Colleges each wrote 100-word short stories, with many of them submitting their work for entry into the national competition to be published and were connected via our state-of-the-art Immersive Rooms to listen to the winning stories being read aloud.

The winning stories were first reviewed and shortlisted by their teachers, with a further review by Leigh Russell, a bestselling author who has been working with Harrow College for more than four years.

Leigh generously gave her time to review 10 shortlisted stories written by Harrow College students and 10 stories written by Uxbridge College students. She selected one winner and two runners-up from each college.

Jamal Khan - prize winner of the Young Writers Stranger Sagas competition. Holding his certificate and a book in front of a noticeboard with the Stranger Sagas poster.A second judge, Joshua Kanadpah, reviewed the stories from Richmond upon Thames College and chose a winner and two runners-up.

Both writers were impressed with the quality of the work and praised the students' imaginations and creativity for writing excellent 100-word stories.

The judges then held a short discussion and announced the overall winners:

  • 1st prize (HRUC): Jamal Khan, Level 3 Travel and Tourism, Uxbridge College
  • 2nd prize: Amelia Khan, Level 2 Combined Science, Harrow College
  • 3rd prize: Michaela Teixeira, Level 3 Technical Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care, Richmond upon Thames College.

Following the competition, Leigh Russell signed copies of her book, which were presented to the winners as prizes.

It was a wonderful celebration across the three campuses, and you can read more of the 100-word stories here on the digital publication
