Certificate in Basic Construction – Starting January 2011 for 18 weeks
From January 2011 Harrow College will be offering the Certificate in Basic Construction. This is a level 1 programme that provides a progress route to other level 2 programmes in the subject area. It is aimed at learners aged 16-18 and has two different routes: Plastering and Floor/Wall Tiling and Plumbing/Maintenance.

We are currently running courses in:
Performing Engineering Operations (Plumbing or Electrical Installation) NVQ Levels 1 and 2
These courses are very ‘hands-on’, therefore you will experience and learn the manual effort and skills required to succeed in the electrical or plumbing trades.
On the electrical installation course you will learn the basics of electrical installation and learn how to install lighting and power circuits, using various materials. If you follow the plumbing route you will experience a wide range of practical plumbing activities. For example, you will install hot and cold water services and waste to sinks, baths, toilets and central heating radiators using various methods.
The qualifications can provide the foundation for a career in engineering, prove your ability to do a particular job or contribute to the completion of an engineering apprenticeship. Upon successful completion of this course you will have acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to continue studies at the next level and you will have the necessary knowledge, skills and confidence to gain employment in the construction industry, either working for yourself or a contractor.
VRQ City and Guilds 6129 Level 2 Plumbing Technical Certificate combined with the City & Guilds 6217- 01 level 1 qualification.
This 2 year course is designed to advance your understanding of basic plumbing systems within the domestic plumbing industry. You’ll develop skills in the following areas: health and safety, plumbing principles, plumbing processes, hot and cold water supplies, sanitation, domestic heating pipe work, environmental awareness, effective working relationships, sheet lead, basic electrics. You’ll be assessed on 60 practical assessments and 12 on-line multiple choice exams. Functional skills in English, maths and ICT are an integral part of this course. This qualification can lead to City & Guilds 6089 NVQ level 2 in Plumbing, Employment or an Apprenticeship in the Plumbing Industry.

The Whitefriars training centre is located in a newly refurbished warehouse, on the Whitefriars Trading Estate, Tudor Road, Wealdstone(Click for map).It incorporates the very latest facilities available for teaching plumbing and electrical trades.
All workshops and other teaching areas have been carefully designed and fitted with equipment that reflect the very best of industry standards, creating an outstanding setting for you to begin learning a trade or to develop your professional skills. You will be taught by certified trainers.
