At Harrow College we support all of our students with their university applications.

Universities accept Level 3 (e.g. A level and BTEC National) qualifications. The UCAS Tariff is the system for allocating points to qualifications used for entry to higher education. Students can use a range of different qualifications to help secure a place on an undergraduate course.

Visit ucas.com/parents for more information on university applications. You can also view our information in our guides ‘Progression to University’ and 'Is Full-time University my Only Option?’.

Getting into university

At Harrow College we support all of our students with their university applications. Our links with local universities enable us to offer extra activities and events:

  • Workshops and talks on choosing suitable universities and writing successful UCAS personal statements
  • HE Fairs – many popular universities come to Harrow College and talk to students about the courses they offer
  • Visits to universities and master classes to give you a real taste of university life

Entry qualifications for university

Universities accept level 3 qualifications (e.g. A level and BTEC National) qualifications. The UCAS Tariff is the system for allocating points to qualifications used for entry to higher education. You will be given predicted grades at the end of the first year on your level 3 course. This will help you work out your UCAS Tariff score for university entry.

AS/A Levels

AS (Advanced Subsidiary) level is a 1 year course and the first year of an A level. A2 level is the second year in the same subject, these courses are designed for students who have gained 6 or more A* - C grades at GCSE. An AS + A2 = A level.

An example: UCAS points of 180 = A2E +A2D=A2C= (40+60+80) or A2C + A2C+ ASE= (80+ 80+20)

BTEC Qualifications

BTECs are career-based courses that give you a practical, real-world approach to learning while developing key knowledge and skills. BTECs give you the skills you need to either move on to higher education or go straight into employment. A BTEC National can earn you UCAS points allowing you to go on to higher education to take a Degree, or Foundation Degree.
