Harrow College students make it to finals of 2009 Young Brits at Art Competition
Aliyah Riyadh, a Harrow College Foundation studies in Art and Design student and Juliette Ndi, a Learning Links student have been shortlisted as finalists in the top 100 of the Young Brits at Art 2009 competition, out of a total entry of 1,639 pictures received from all over England, Wales and Scotland.
Young Brits at Art is a national art competition organised by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. Young people were invited to create art works on the theme of Identity: thoughts and feelings about living in Britain today, through self-portraiture or pictures depicting everyday concerns and aspirations relating to equality and human rights in Britain.
Aliyah’s work pictured below was part of a project for textiles and mixed media and is a stitched textiles version of a ‘college boy’. Aliyah describes her art work in her own words:
"Living in London today, yes you do find divides within ethnic societies, but being someone who has travelled you realise how well integrated London really is in comparison to other places. An issue that I have found many teens face (me being one of them) is the need to fit that certain social bracket. I decided to base my piece on aspirations. The image that everyone wants to be, the cool factor, kids today have a certain bracket we feel need to be filled, you wear the right clothes walk the right walk, talk the right talk. What about those who do appear to “fit the part?” Are they not stereotyped too?"
As shortlisted nominees, Aliyah and Juliette will be invited to the awards ceremony and reception on Thursday 2nd July at the prestigious Southbank Centre, London. The judges will choose ten winners, out of which three entries will receive top prizes (ten prizes in total).
