Sweet success for Harrow College sugarcraft class
Harrow College scoop six Sugarcraft awards at Salon Culinaire International de Londres held at Hotelympia, London At Salon Culinaire, a world class culinary competition with an unrivalled reputation across the world, five of our Cake Decoration and Sugarcraft learners entered and competed against participants from all over the world from 28th February until 4th March.
Along with five of the learners, Ulla Netzband, Sugarcraft lecturer also bagged an award. Suriya Beesley walked away with a Gold award and Leila Middleton received a Silver in the Floral Display category and a Bronze in the Miniature Sugar Flowers category. Suriya, one of the new students was also awarded the Best in the Class award. Claudette Wadood and Ulla Netzband (lecturer) came home with Bronze for their Sugar Floral Display.
David Duque received a Bronze for Floral arrangement where as Cris Muldoon won a Bronze for her blue Pastillage Mask that she designed for the first time. ‘As it was my first time to design such a mask, I was thrilled to receive the award,’ she said.
In their own words, the competition was against the standard and not among the participants. For each category they entered, they had to pay a fee of £14.
As her students say, Ulla’s precise and botanically correct instructions helped them achieve the medals. Ulla is very happy with the students’ achievements, ‘I’m so proud of them all. It’s absolutely amazing coming to the class.’
Thanking the Sugarcraft lecturer for her excellent guidance, Claudette said, ‘I get pleasure from creativity. I’ve got arthritis and this class is like a therapy for me. I’ve got lots of aches and pains. This class gives me something to focus on, to divert my mind from the pain. I was delighted to have achieved something. It’s good to know, what you’ve put into practice pays off.’
A 77 year old Leila has been coming to the class since 1988 and enjoys the craft so much that she even teaches it to her grandchildren, ‘it’s really good for your mind. When I received the medal, my grandchildren were thrilled. It reinforces your confidence.’
The learners attend the same class every week but they all have different reasons. For Suriya, the gold medallist, the class provides an outlet, ‘I am a housewife and it gives me a creative outlet. I was totally stunned when I received my award. It gave me a sense of achievement. Ulla is undoubtedly the best teacher and I couldn’t have achieved this without her.’
A chef by profession, David Duque joined the class as a break from his main job. He says it’s not just a class but a place to socialise and feel good, ‘I feel great to be among these like minded people and they are all friendly. I enjoy the company of the learners.’
