Harrow College keeps the Matrix standard and quality mark

The Matrix standard is the national quality standard for any organisation that delivers information, advice and guidance on learning and work. The assessment was conducted from 1st until 5th February 2010 and Harrow College has met all the eight standards of the Matrix mark. Unlike the assessments in the past, this year’s Matrix assessment was conducted on the whole College. It is called the embedded route and involves tutors along with other members of staff.

‘We were informed by the assessor that at present, there are not many colleges in the country who have achieved this new embedded whole College route,’ said Stevie Dee, Professional Development Manager.

The Matrix mark identifies with the quality of advice and guidance and it is assessed every three years. The process involves the whole College getting together and putting a lot of effort in to get the best results.

The Matrix assessor interviewed more than 20 members of staff including Vice Principal, Pat Carvalho and Director of Learner Services, Bob Vesey. Also, 20 students from different areas of the College were asked about the provision of guidance and advice. Departments such as Learning Centres, Careers, Admissions, LearnDirect and Learning Support were considered as well as files of evidence.

A few excerpts from the report:

‘IAG (Information Advice and Guidance) is of high importance at the College and this is reflected in the setting of numerous department level objectives and targets and the ongoing monitoring of performance against them. This aspect of leadership and management has been significantly developed since the last assessment.’

‘The College undertakes extensive promotion of the various elements of service and this leads to high levels of awareness amongst the learner community.’

Thanking all staff for their time and hard work, Stevie Dee says, ‘applying the Matrix quality standard for the whole College was very challenging as it required a whole College team effort from all staff and students. Everyone worked together exceedingly well to achieve it.’
