Juliette has Down’s Syndrome and is visually and hearing impaired.

Young Brits at Art is a national art competition organised by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. Young people were invited to create art works on the theme of Identity: thoughts and feelings about living in Britain today, through self-portraiture or pictures depicting everyday concerns and aspirations relating to equality and human rights in Britain.

In the ceremony held at the Southbank Centre, Juliette’s self portrait was very well received by the viewers. Her choice of vibrant colours impressed the onlookers. She said, ‘I like painting myself, swans and birds. I like my Learning Links course. In London I like things to do. I love music, Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke from the X Factor and Sugababes. My favourite colours are yellow and pink. I watch Eastenders.’

Trevor Phillips, Chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission said on the day, ‘What this competition tells us is something important about young people, that they do care about the country that they're in, they care about their relationships, they care about their families and their neighbourhoods. Secondly, the sense of the portrait, the pictures are realistic but, above all, hopeful.’
