A new 16-19 bursary fund replaces the EMA scheme as EMA is no longer available to new learners.
Launching in September 2011, the new 16-19 Bursary Fund is designed to help support young people who face the greatest financial barriers to participation in education or training.
The fund is split into 2 types of Bursary payment:-
1. Guaranteed Bursaries of £1,200.00 per year to the most vulnerable young people (young people in care, care leavers and those on income support).
2. Discretionary Bursary payments of £15.00 per week to learners whose annual household income is below £16,190.00 per year (the Free School Meals eligibility threshold).
Discretionary payments may also be made towards course related costs such as: equipment, field trips/visits, books, transport costs etc.
Learners who are eligible to continue receiving transitional support from EMA during 2011/2012 will be eligible to apply to the 16-19 Bursary Fund but the college will take this into account before determining whether additional bursary payments can be made.
The most vulnerable students currently receiving EMA will be eligible for a guaranteed bursary of £1,200 a year, in place of their current weekly EMA payments. Students should contact Learner Services on 0208 909 6239 as it will be more beneficial for students to receive the guaranteed bursary.
If you successfully applied for EMA in 2009/10 you will continue to receive payments at the level set out in your EMA guarantee for each week you are in education or training. Until July 2012 (or the end of your programme), you will be paid weekly and payments will be linked to attendance. You will receive a letter from EMA which you should bring in to College when you enrol in September.
Please note since the Government has allocated fewer funds for the bursary scheme learners may not receive the same payment as for EMA.
