World Champion relay athlete visits Harrow College
Speaking to Harrow College Sports students at the Harrow Weald campus, World Champion athlete, Aleen Bailey emphasized the importance of hard work to achieve success. The students from A levels as well as BTEC Sports courses attended Aleen’s talk on Thursday, 17th September.
Aleen impressed and motivated her keen audience by telling them of her experience in Jamaica and how athletics shaped her life. She started running from a very young age of 10. Now, at 28 she has the World Championship medals and the Olympics medals to her credit that she won for Jamaica. She has just recently won a gold medal at 4x100 relay in Berlin held in August this year. She has also bagged Gold in her team of 4x100 relay sprinters at the Athens Olympics.
She was eager to answer students’ questions who wanted to know about her diet, exercise routine and her experience as a sprinter. When asked about her motivation to get into athletics, she replied, ‘I didn’t want my mother to work for other people. That’s what motivated me. I wanted to give her a better life and that made me work harder leading me to success.’
Having been involved in sports from a young age, I learnt a lot, said Aleen, ‘Being part of a team teaches you how to work with others from different backgrounds and different cultures. I had to understand their ways and I learnt how to react to them. I also learnt that ego doesn’t help when you are working in a team.’
Advising Harrow College students, she said, ‘School is very important. It teaches you structure. You can be whoever you want to be once you set your mind to it. You need to work hard, stay focused and do your best at everything. At times, I felt frustrated and I just wanted to give up but I kept trying.’
Aleen is being trained in the U.S and she is going to compete at the London Olympics in 2012 and hopes to win an individual medal.
