Ben Lampert, the College’s former student is playing in the British football team as a midfielder, at the 21st Summer Deaflympic Games in Taipei. More than 3,200 deaf athletes participated in the 2005 Deaflympics in Australia. After winning a gold medal four years ago, he hopes that British team will do the same this year.
Ben considers going to Australia and winning that gold medal for Britain is his best achievement, ‘it was the best experience. It was just wonderful to be with Deafpeople from all over the world. I still keep in touch with the people I met there.’
Harrow College and Protocol National donated £500 each to Ben for his expenses at the Games, to be held in September this year. Wishing Ben best of luck for the game, Harrow College’s Principal Tony Medhurst said, ‘we hope the team wins gold this time again.’
Experience at the College
‘I studied at Harrow Weald campus. The College was very supportive towards my course, my life, everything. It helped to develop my independence. I studied Sports and all the teachers were helpful and I was fully supported by the Communication Support Unit at the College.
Advice to fellow students
‘What I’d tell other students is to try your best to build your own character. However many step you need to take, take them. Get all that knowledge and experience that you require to achieve the best.
Future goals
‘I’m now studying Sports Science at Brunel University and also play with Fulham Deaf Football club. Football is my religion. I can’t live without football. I wouldn’t know what to do without football. I’d like to finish my degree and concentrate on coaching Deaf and Hearing Impaired students.’
