A Cambridge Undergraduate did her A Level Further Mathematics at Harrow College and shares with us the advantages of having studied here.
‘While based at a local high school from 2007 to 2009, I came to Harrow College to study Further Maths because my school didn't offer it. I really enjoyed studying Further Maths at Harrow College. I had excellent teachers throughout the course; they prepared us well for the A Level exams and introduced us to many events and "challenges".
‘I was part of a team that represented the College in a Team Challenge which took place at Imperial College. I also took part in the Cipher Challenge run by Southampton University and in the UK Senior Mathematics Challenge and I attended a Summer School at the London School of Economics; these were all activities which the College Maths staff introduced me to. These extras kept Maths fun, and stopped it just being a set of exams we had to pass.
‘In addition to Maths and Further Maths A levels, I took the Advanced Extension Award in Maths, and STEP papers which are required for entry to Cambridge. With three other students, I was given an extra lesson once a week to prepare for the AEA. Whenever I got stuck on a STEP problem, my teachers were always willing to give up their free time to help.
‘At the end of my two years studying Further Maths at Harrow College, I obtained A grades in both A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, with full marks in eight out of the twelve modules. I also obtained a Distinction in the Advanced Extension Award. I did well enough in the STEP exams to gain a place at Cambridge University and I am now studying Mathematics at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge.’
